“Girls!”

I rolled my head, dimly saw Serena standing in the doorway. One hand was on her hip, the other still holding the door handle.

“I don’t think I need to ask what’s going on, do I?”

“Serena,” I gasped, scrambling to pull myself out from under Francine. “It’s not-”

“Oh, please. Don’t insult my intelligence, Saffron.”

I half expected her to turn around and walk away in disgust, tell us we were both fired. Instead, she crossed the room to her desk and pulled out her office chair.

Francine climbed down off me and pulled up her pants, started to buckle them as she pushed her hair out of her face. “Serena, we got carried away.”

“Yes, Fran, I noticed.”

I leaned forward and Francine took my hand, helped me off the desk. “Serena, I’m sorry.” I took a deep breath, my body still tingling with excitement. “It was my fault.”

“Ah!” Serena grabbed one of the files I had been lying on. One of the few that hadn’t spilled their contents all over the floor. She looked up, glanced first at me, then at Francine. “Both of you clean up this mess, please.”

“Yes, Serena,” we said in unison.

“We’ll talk about this in the morning.”

Heat rose to my face as I nodded. Then Serena turned around and left, and I felt Francine’s fingers twine into mine.

“Don’t worry,” she said. “It will be fine. I’ve known Serena a long time.”

“She seemed pretty pissed.”

Francine laughed. “It’s not as bad as it seems.”

“What do you mean?”

“Oh, you’ll see. I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise. Like I said, I’ve known Serena a long time.” She leaned her head against my bare shoulder. “Let’s get this place tidied up, then do you want to come back to mine?”

My heart rate was finally returning to normal. I took a deep breath and nodded. “Computer games?”

She laughed. “If you like.”
